Socrates was taken illegally from the wild as a fledgling. He was kept in total isolation and darkness for two years. He was rescued in 2000. Socrates arrived at the Sanctuary 2001 and his housing and care are sponsored by Ashland University. Socrates is unable to reside in the large flight enclosure designed for him. Because of his history he is very fearful of random movement and open spaces. The staff works with him daily and he is getting very close to being available for programming at the Sanctuary.
