The Sanctuary is located on 90 acres of forest and marsh that border the Clearfork Reservoir. There are eight scenic trails that will take you through groves of pine, marshland, meadows, and the Clearfork River. All of our trails are open year round with exceptions occurring due to weather on occasion. If you'd like to download a trail map (.PDF file) now you can, via the link below this paragraph, or we have maps available in our visitor's center.

The butterfly garden in front of the Songbird Aviary was started as a Jr. Naturalist project in 2001. The garden began as a small project that the J.Nats would take care of but it has slowly grown into something much larger. In 2006 the two locations for the butterfly meadows were picked out and the Jr. Naturalists again took charge. The meadow at the head of the trail sprouted the next year with a variety of wildflower species including wingstem, milkweed, and black eyed susans. The meadow on the lower half of Pine Siskin trail didn't sprout till the spring of 2008 when it erupted into color.

The Butterfly Garden as well as some of the gardens surrounding the Visitor Center at the Sanctuary have been taken the local garden club; Flowers and Friends.
